As a celebration of our alumni, each month we will highlight a new book written by one of
Oxford's North American-based alumni.
Our August 2022 book is "From Family to Philosophy" by Henry Summerfield (Exeter, 1956).
Henry Summerfield graduated from Exeter College in 1959 and earned an M Litt at the University of Durham. After teaching at the MS University of Baroda, India, and the University of Illinois, he served in the English Department of the University of Victoria, British Columbia, from 1966 to 2001. While teaching, he published That Myriad-minded Man: a biography of George William Russell "A.E." 1867-1935 (1975), An Introductory Guide to The Anathemata and the Sleeping Lord Sequence of David Jones (1979), and A Guide to the Books of William Blake for Innocent and Experienced Readers (1998). In retirement, he has written From Family to Philosophy.
