As a celebration of our alumni, each month we will highlight a new book written by one of
Oxford's alumni.
Our May 2023 book is "The Ultimate Flower Gardener's Guide"
by Jenny Rose Carey (Lady Margaret Hall, 1981).
Jenny Rose Carey is an avid hands-on gardener who was brought up in England by a family of gardeners and botanists. Although born in London she was brought up in the countryside of Kent where her ability to roam the fields and be outside all day was a precursor to studying Biology, and then training to be a teacher. At Oxford University (Lady Margaret Hall) she met her husband Gus (Keble), and they have been married for nearly 40 years.
They moved to Pennsylvania in the 1980's, and despite the shock of such a different climate Jenny continued to garden. They now have three girls, two sons-in-law and a little grandson. The family moved to Northview in Ambler in 1997. The house and its four-and-a-half-acre garden was a real fixer-upper but has blossomed under her care. They now consist of a series of themed ‘garden rooms’, including a Stumpery, Moss Garden, Herb, Cutting, and Dry Gardens – to name a few. Jenny and her garden have been featured in many newspapers and magazines including The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal.
Jenny has had many careers from teaching in both countries (high school, Temple University and the Barnes Foundation) to running a business, to Ambler Arboretum Director, and Senior Director at Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Meadowbrook Farm. Her Timber Press books are 'Glorious Shade', 2017, and her latest book ‘The Ultimate Flower Gardener’s Guide’, 2022.
