Executive Director

New Leadership in North America

Michael Cunningham, the Executive Director of the University’s North American Office, will be stepping down at the end of this year. Michael has worked for Oxford for thirty years, twenty of these as Director of the office.

From January 2023, Sheila Barrett, will be taking over the role of Executive Director, having successfully been Deputy Director for the last six years. Sheila has a wealth of experience, having worked in Oxford’s New York office for the last eight years.

Professor David Gann CBE, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Development and External Affairs said of Michael Cunningham:
“On behalf of the collegiate University, I would like to thank Michael for his dedication and support in helping to secure major multi-million donations over his tenure. These have included the Rosenblatt Pool, the Mathematical Institute’s Andrew Wiles Building, the Ertegun Graduate Scholarships, and the Stephen A Schwarzman Centre for the Humanities. We very much appreciate Michael’s commitment to the University and its colleges, leading a vibrant Development and Alumni Relations Programme across the USA and Canada over many years. The University wishes him well for his future endeavours.”

Lord Patten of Barnes, Chancellor, University of Oxford said:
“Michael Cunningham worked enthusiastically and diligently for the University for many years. I am particularly grateful to him for his friendship and support during almost 20 years of my Chancellorship. He has always looked after me and my wife on our frequent visits for Oxford to the US both kindly and well. I wish him the very best.”

Professor David Gann said of Sheila Barrett:
“Sheila is no stranger to Oxford or the New York office and becomes its Executive Director at an incredibly exciting and important time. The role of the North American office in supporting the University and its colleges has never been more important. Sheila will be hitting the ground running, having successfully led a cross-University team to secure a major donation from the Mastercard Foundation, both for scholarships and for work on pandemic sciences in Africa. Please join me in welcoming Sheila as the incoming Executive Director of the North American Office”
