As a celebration of our alumni, each month we will highlight a new book written by one of
Oxford's alumni.
Our January 2023 book is Stonewall Jackson, Beresford Hope, and the Meaning of the American Civil War in Britain
by Michael Turner (Worcester, 1984).
Michael J. Turner is the Roy Carroll Distinguished Professor of British History at Appalachian State University, North Carolina. He spent seven years at Worcester College, Oxford, gaining a Prize First in Modern History (1987) and the D.Phil (1991). He taught at several universities in the UK before relocating to the United States in 2008. Widely published in the fields of Anglo-American interaction, British foreign policy, and reform movements in nineteenth-century Britain, he is currently working on projects relating to the Church of England in the Victorian age. He returns to Oxford quite regularly, most recently as a Visiting Research Fellow, 2019-20.
