R David Edelman
As a celebration of our alumni, each month we will highlight a new book written by one of
Oxford's
alumni.

Our August 2024 book is "Rethinking Cyber Warfare: The International Relations of Digital Disruption"
by R David Edelman (Hertford College, 2007), published by Oxford University Press.

Dr. R. David Edelman is an academic, investor, and former White House technology advisor working at the intersection of emerging technologies and geopolitics.

He is currently the IPRI Distinguished Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) based at its Computer Science & AI Lab (CSAIL) and Center for International Studies (CIS), as well as a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C..

Edelman served for six years in the Obama White House, including as Special Assistant to the President for Economic & Technology Policy on the National Economic Council and as Director for Cybersecurity on the National Security Council.  When appointed in 2010, he was the youngest-ever Director in the NSC’s 60-year history.

He began his career as a founding member of the State Department's new team managing the area of his Oxford Doctoral research: the international relations of cyberwarfare and emerging technologies.  He would go on to serve as the lead U.S. negotiator on cyber and digital economy matters at the United Nations and later, the G-20.

In the private sector, he has led and built public-sector and global strategy teams at multi-billion-dollar firms in the AI and clean energy sectors; founded a firm helping emerging technology companies navigate geopolitics; and invested in a range of venture-backed startups.

Previously named one of Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30” and later one of three “All-Star Alumni” in the magazine’s history, his insights and analysis have appeared in print in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Der Spiegel, Financial Times, The Economist, WIRED, Fast Company, Forbes, and Fortune, and in broadcast on CNN, Bloomberg, CNBC, MSNBC, and NPR.  He is a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Dr. Edelman studied at Yale (B.A.), and Oxford (Hertford, M.Phil; Univ, D.Phil), where he was a Clarendon Scholar.
