As a celebration of our alumni, each month we will highlight a new book written by one of
Oxford's North American-based alumni.
Our December 2020 book is "Re-Enchanted: The Rise of Children's Fantasy Literature in the Twentieth Century" by Maria Sachiko Cecire (Keble, 2006).
Maria Sachiko Cecire is Associate Professor of Literature and the founding Director of the Center for Experimental Humanities at Bard College. Experimental Humanities focuses on how technology mediates what it means to be human and embraces historical, theoretical, and practice-based approaches to this question. Cecire’s research interests include children's literature and youth culture, media and digital studies, medieval literature and its afterlives, and the role of the humanities in contemporary society. She is the author of Re-Enchanted: The Rise of Children’s Fantasy Literature in the Twentieth Century (University of Minnesota Press, 2019), and co-editor of Space and Place in Children’s Literature, 1789-Present (Routledge, 2015) with fellow Oxford alumnae Hannah Field, Kavita Mudan Finn, and Malini Roy. Cecire is also a National Project Scholar for the American Library Association’s Great Stories Club, a reading and discussion group for underserved youth around the US, and is collaborating on an interdisciplinary research project about this population’s intellectual lives and responses to young adult literature. Cecire received her B.A. in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago, and Master of Studies in English Medieval Studies and a Doctor of Philosophy in English from the University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. She grew up in Newport News, Virginia.
