Alexis Pogorelskin
As a celebration of our alumni, each month we will highlight a new book written by one of
Oxford's
alumni.

Our January 2025 book is "Hollywood and the Nazis on the Eve of War: The Case of the Mortal Storm"
by Alexis Pogorelskin
(St Hilda's College, 1976).

Alexis Pogorelskin chaired the History Department at the University of Minnesota-Duluth for nineteen years and for fifteen years taught History of the Holocaust, having participated in the Holocaust Educational Foundation Summer Program.  She was Rhodes Visiting Fellow at St. Hilda's College, Oxford as well as the first Vera Brittain Scholar on Women and War funded by the British Society of Women Writers and Journalists.  

She has co-edited Canadian-American Slavonic Studies, v. 53, 2019 to which she also contributed the essay “‘Under Seven Seals’: New Perspectives on Lenin’s Testament”; She co-edited The Space Between. Literature and Culture 1914-1945, v. 16, 2020 titled “International Cinema in the 1930s.” Most recently she co-edited Congress of Contradiction: The Tenth Party Congress, 1921 (Brill, 2024) to which she contributed the essay “Kamenev at the Tenth Party Congress”: Turning Point in Power”. Recent publications include “Double Crossed: Questions of Jewish Identity in The Great Dictator and Genghis Cohn, in Jewish Film and New Media (2021); “Phyllis Bottome-An Intermodernist Under Treatment in the Age of Modernism: Tuberculosis and the Embrace of Alfred Adler’s Depth Psychology,” in The Space Between (2021); “Kamenev in Conflict with Lenin and Trotskii: The Perils of revolutionary Biography,” in Personal Trajectories in Russia’s Great War and Revolution, 1914-22 (2021). Her monograph, "Hollywood and the Nazis on the Eve of War: The Case of The Mortal Storm," was published by Bloomsbury Press in 2024.  She is currently completing another monograph titled Lev Kamenev and the Pursuit of Moderate Politics Among the Bolsheviks to be published by Brill.
