As a celebration of our alumni, each month we will highlight a new book written by one of
Oxford's alumni.
Our July 2024 book is "Strabo's Geography: A Translation for the Modern World"
by Sarah Pothecary (St Anne's College, 1977).
Sarah Pothecary grew up in Trinidad and Tobago, Scotland, England, Cyprus, and Sweden. I studied Classics at St. Anne’s College, Oxford, from 1977-81, then spent several years working in the City of London before emigrating to Canada, where I returned to university and to Classics, taking my PhD from the University of Toronto in 1994. My thesis was on the Greco-Roman author Strabo, and I have continued working on raising his profile since then, culminating in the translation featured here. I am a dual citizen of Canada and the UK, which I believe has been helpful in appreciating the nuances of Strabo’s work. Strabo was Greek by language and culture but he was writing in and about the Roman world.
